Soil Test and Nitrogen Loss Software

Soil Test Software, ver. 1.0 (SOIL99A.EXE) - This software is based on the Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations for more than 35 commercial crop types. The software calculates lime and fertilizer recommendations. It has import capabilities that can take large data files for fields with multiple samples. You can also print out the recommendations.

Nitrogen Transformations and Loss Estimates, ver. 1.0 (FERT99A.EXE) - This software calculates the amount of nitrogen transformed or lost through de-nitrification or leaching for particular zones, nitrogen sources, and nitrogen rates. It also considers factors such as application month, temperature, application methods, crop and soil type, and soil saturation.

This software was developed by Jay Johnson, Extension Soil Fertility Specialist, School of Natural Resources. It is available for download at the Ohio State University Extension software Web site.

Finding Information Faster:Search Tools

Horticulture and Crop Science Fact Sheet Database Search Engine - Search the Internet for information related to horticulture and crop science from 46 different colleges, universities, and institutions across the United States and Canada. Over 20,000 pages of information are frequently updated in order to provide the most concentrated source of plant-related information available for answering your questions, assisting you in gaining an education, or helping you teach others about plants. Developed by Tim Rhodus, Horticulture and Crop Sciences.

Agriculture and Natural Resources Decisions Network Search Engine. More than 5,000 land and water resource related links have been researched by more than 12 University experts throughout Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, and Ohio to be used as a quicker way of finding information on the web. Search for information on a variety of topics, including: land and water resource publications and materials; models, decision aids, expert systems, and software; precision farming; global positioning systems; remote sensing; geographic information systems; mapping information; soils data and information; and weather information. The search engine can be used to search the entire 8-state region or each state separately.

Agriculture and Natural Resources Decisions Network

Are you looking for Water Related Resources, Publications and Materials developed by The Ohio State University, Sea Grant, Midwest Plan Service, North Central Regional, and Northeast Regional Agricultural Engineering Service. Look no further they are available on the web in one location. Gary Graham, Northwest District has compiled all the relevant publications for Ohio. It also provides the convenience of ordering publications at this location.

Are you looking for additional agriculture and natural resources information & education material resources from Ohio and other locations? An 8-state project was under way last year to find available Internet links for these most important resources. This web site includes a comprehensive list of Internet resource links to: land and water resource publications and materials; models, decision aids, expert systems, and software; precision farming; global positioning systems; remote sensing; geographic information systems; mapping information; soils data and information; and other search tools. Web site linkages were also established with other state organizations and state/federal agency information databases. A search engine has also been developed to find all the information much easier. Look for further developments for the web site this year.

Your GPS and Year 2000 ... or is it August 22, 1999?

Will your farm GPS receiver be affected on January 1, 2000? No, but it could be affected by the End of Week Rollover on August 22, 1999. The atomic clocks in the GPS satellites were set with base dates in January 1980 and the indicator for the week was set at a maximum of 1024. This means that on August 22, 1999 the atomic clocks will reset themselves to week 0.

Accuracy of navigation may be severely affected. Although it appears that GPS broadcasts do contain sufficient data to ensure that navigation need not be affected by rollover in 1999, it is not proven that the firmware in all receivers will handle the rollovers in stride. Some receivers may claim wrong locations in addition to incorrect dates. Some manufacturers have already solved the problem, but some have not. The firmware in all affected (mostly older) receivers will have to be replaced. This will involve replacement of PROMs; some are socketed, some are soldered. As a technical matter, the solution is quite simple. It's the logistics that will take some effort.

Without a GPS Simulator, there is no way for users to test a GPS receiver for this problem. Users are encouraged to contact their receiver manufacturer to determine if their receiver will be affected, in particular if a failure of navigation could put lives or property at risk.
